apteryx wa

workin' nine to one

when we're not out photographing scenic vistas or fleeing from possible air raids, our services are employed in these lovely outdoor offices. duties include digging, raking, weeding, planting, watering, building, hauling, gathering, polishing, and chopping. and sometimes some light catering and waitering.

  • the rocks are kauri gum (amber) that you have to dig for on the forest and on beaches. there is not much left since most of it was found, removed and taken to the UK to manufacture linoleum. we actually weren't washing the gum; we were smoothing them out with sandpaper and then rinsing them. then we polished them with oil so our hosts could sell them in the shop.

everyone we've stayed with so far has had there own vegetable garden. the soil is very rich because of all the volcanic activity (there are hundreds of active volcanoes throughout the country).

we've seen lots of rabbits but no deer yet. deer are not indigenous but i think some were brought over by the europeans. also, possums are everywhere and you are free to kill them whenever you want because they are the biggest pest problem in the country. as a result there is a lot of possum clothing, which is actually very soft.
